worn-out sandals
atop a trash bin…
summer ends
Comment: sandals (sandaru サンダル) are a widespread symbol of summer (natsu 夏), so their presence into the trash bin creates a consequential link with the closing ku, confirming the end of the season. However, the key element of this poem is the ‘worn-out’ adjective in line 1, which presupposes a long, intense use of those shoes and, therefore, the experience and the paths followed by the author until now.
A new season is approaching, which means new footwear and new paths to take without forgetting the steps that have already been taken.
