Lakshmi Iyer (India)

early sunrise–
my new
kaleidoscope

Comment: this haiku compares the shades of light refracted at daybreak (asayake 朝焼け) with the play of colors produced by the kaleidoscope mechanism, evoking a series of suggestions linked to the poet’s childhood. The ‘new’ adjective placed at the end of line 2 –which is running over into the next line as an enjambement– marks a turning point: in fact, it seems to indicate a definitive break with the past and a new awareness that leads her to become one with the world, instead of using an object to filter its essence.
