early morning…
a wren’s song echoes
through the trail

Comment: an immersive haiku where the quietness and silence of the early morning (sōchō 早朝) is suddenly broken by the song of a wren (misosazai 鷦鷯, a winter kigo) echoing off in the distance. Its sharp, intermittent voice is rendered through the alliteration of the ‘s’ sound in line 2, while the ‘t’ consonant in the last verse reinforces its disruption in the whole scene. A good juxtaposition with a subtle and essential charm.
