beyond an asterisk
the scent
of ylang-ylang
Comment: a poem focused on the senses in a metaphysical context that still maintains a link with reality thanks to the scent of the flowers of ylang-ylang and a dry, nonjudgmental language (in fact, no verb or adjective is present). The lack of a cutting mark (kireji 切れ字) doesn’t affect the layered value of this work since the first line clearly represents the premise and the origin of the following ones. Ylang-ylang’s essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy and has a spiritual meaning that strengthens the semantic sphericity of this poem, which is very close to the gendai 現代 style and aesthetics.
