Agus Maulana Sunjaya (Indonesia)

a ladybug
throwing my thought
this way and that

Comment: an ichibutsujitate 一物仕立て (‘single image’) piece of work that binds the poet’s feelings to the smallest elements of nature (shizen 自然), here represented by the ladybug (tentōmushi 天道虫), which is a summer kigo (cf. another well-known haiku by Mitsuhashi Takajo: 天道虫天の密書を翅裏に, a ladybug/ under its wings/ a heavenly message). The alliteration of the ‘t’ sound in lines 2-3 reinforces, with its hardness and solidity, the sense of loss of the protagonist, whose thoughts are tossing and turning ‘this way and that’, according to the unpredictable movements of poetic inspiration.

  1. Here, Agus Maulana Sunjaya shows the distraction something so tiny can create, including our thoughts, and almost taking charge of what direction they take:

    throwing my thought
    this way and that

There is something special about an individual adult ladybug/ladybird travelling around our hand, and again taking charge of us for a moment, or two.

    Yellow-rattle meadow–
    a two spot ladybird turning
    my hand around

Wonderful haiku by Agus Maulana Sunjaya!
